What are Viruses, Worms and Trojan Horses?

Viruses are hidden computer programs that are attached to other programs. All viruses have the ability to copy themselves and take up memory space within the host computer and some can also modify existing programs (Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_virus).

Viruses were first created in the early 1980's and there are currently hundreds of thousands in existence around the world.

Worms are programs that spread themselves through systems on their own. They typically install adware or spyware within unsuspecting systems but they can be more aggressive and do significant damage to host systems.

The total cost to the worldwide community for this single worm is unknown but probably exceeded 10 million dollars (US).

Lastly there are Trojan horse programs which pose far more serious threats to computers and systems. These programs always look like something else and are generally not designed to be self-replicated.

Once installed in a computer they can perform a variety of actions such as deleting files, corrupting programs, installing spyware or even taking over control of the infected computer.

Trojan horses are integral to data theft, a crime that probably cost the world 2 billion dollars (US) in 2006 according to Dr. Alan Solomon, an expert in security (Source: http://www.beyondsecurity.com/whitepapers/SolomonEvronSept06.pdf).
